PROPRIETOR’S MESSAGE

The Catholic Church believes education is an integral part of her God-given mission on earth and in faithfulness to this mission has worked determinedly over the centuries to establish educational institutions across the world. The Church,in her wisdom, views education as essential in preparing her children for what they must be and for what they must do tofully realize the will of God as they work to care for God’s creation- the sublime purpose for which they were created.

In following the same path, the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos has over the years established different formaleducational institutions ranging from primary to secondary schools, college of education and university. Currently theArchdiocese boasts of a total of over thirty nursery and primary schools, fourteen secondary schools, three skillacquisition centres and two tertiary institutions (a College of Education and a University).

Some of these institutions are coeducational while others are not; and to the glory of God, St. Gregory’s College,founded 27th January, 1928 (96 years ago) is the oldest of all the schools in the Archdiocese.

We are grateful to God for the life of the College and all those who have, at different times, managed the affairs ofthe College and for the beautiful crop of “Gregorians” who have graduated from it. We pray to God to continuously blessthe College and all those associated with it. Amen.

Entrance Examination for 2025/2026 academic session

Obtain an Entrance Examination form for ₦10,000 from the College Administrative office between 8am and 3pm from Monday through Friday. Fill the sections therein appropriately and affix a passport photograph each on the required portions of the form. Ensure that the “RECOMMENDATION BY HEAD TEACHER” section is duly signed and stamped by the Head Teacher. Return the form to the College before the date of the entrance examination in March. Candidates must report in the College at 7am on the 8th March, 2025 for accreditation prior to the commencement of Examination at 8am. Date of release of Examination results and Interview will be made known to the candidates on the entrance examination day. Date of release of Interview results/Collection of admission letter and prospectus will be announced to the candidates/parents on Interview day.

Administrator’s Message

St. Gregory’s College was originally established as St. Gregory’s Grammar School by the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos on 12th March, 1882 at Igbosere Road, Lagos. The school shared the same site with St. John’s Evangelist Catholic Infant School and St. Francis Xavier Primary School (now Holy Cross School). These two were established in 1871. The establishment of St. Gregory’s Grammar School was to create a desired alternative to CMS Grammar School and Methodist Boys High School. It became the third secondary school of the 1880s. At its establishment, St. Gregory’s Grammar School had the teachers’ training wing and the Grammar School wing. At the former, teachers were prepared for the examination of the College of Preceptors and teachers’ certificate. In September 1909, King’s College was established by an Act of the British Parliament to provide for the youth of the colony a higher general education than that provided by the existing mission schools, and to prepare them for matriculation examination of the University of London, and to give a useful course of study to qualify for professional life or to enter government or mercantile service. Some students of the existing schools took examinations into King’s College to partake in the new curriculum. In 1927, after securing a large portion of land in the Southwest Ikoyi region of Lagos State, the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos relocated St. Gregory’s Grammar School and rebranded it as St. Gregory’s College. This gave the students the opportunity to partake in the National Curriculum and their A-Levels studies. In a short time, St. Gregory’s College became the envy of all because of its holistic educational programme. Her students excelled in morals, academics and sports. From 1979 to 2001, St. Gregory’s College (alongside other missionary and private schools) was taken over by the Lagos State Government. The poor management of the school during this period left the school in a sorry state.

However, in 2001, the Bola Ahmed administration returned some Mission Schools to their rightful owners; and St. Gregory’s College was one of them. This opened a new chapter in the history of the College. The College grew quickly beyond the glories of its early years to what it is today. We give thanks to God and to the Catholic Church in Lagos for this great institution of learning which has given holistic education to many great men (and women who took part in her A-Levels programme). We also thank all the priests, men and women who have laboured all through her history to make the College great! Up Gregs!
